The Leader of the Opposition then clarified his comments that say gay marriage was not the "most important issue" to Australia.

"I think it is certainly a very important issue," he said in Caboolture, north of Brisbane.

It would be the "bread and butter issues" such as jobs and the economy to concentrate when he became Prime Minister.

"To be is to define sexual orientation as a fashion of the moment deeply offensive to many Australians, especially for families and people who happen to be gay or lesbian," he told ABC television.

The opposition leader was "out of touch" with modern Australian values, he said.

"The sexual orientation of people is just the way they are," Albanese said.
